Founded in early 2004, the Corfu Foundation is a global, nonprofit organization dedicated to nurturing the understanding that individual well-being is inseparably linked to concern and compassion for others and the world around us. We support groups and individuals whose innovative projects and ideas reflect our mission and that demonstrate a long-term impact in raising consciousness and improving the quality of life.

We recognize that today’s world is one of great challenges and opportunities. Just as technology and commerce bring us closer together, growing inequities threaten to drive us apart. While science heralds dramatic breakthroughs, our precious earth falters beneath the weight of lifestyles and values that it cannot sustain. Often people avoid looking at the magnitude of challenges facing our world because they feel overwhelmed or powerless.

Today’s global citizens are challenged to find new ways to cooperate and participate. As a Foundation, we seek to promote greater awareness of imbalances that need to be corrected and to offer opportunities for individuals and groups to contribute solutions. Our desire is to empower individuals to integrate spiritual awareness into their lives.

Our Origins

The Corfu Foundation has its roots on the Greek island from which it derives its name. It was there that founder Janice Scangas and her identical twin sister were placed in an orphanage at the age of two. When they were nearly six years old, a Greek-American couple adopted them, bringing them into a successful family in the U.S. Janice’s early childhood of poverty and abandonment, in contrast with the generosity and opportunities offered by her new family, impressed upon her the power of giving meaningfully to others.

In 1987, Janice started meditating and opening to the importance of spiritual experiences and principles. In creating the Corfu Foundation, she has blended her passion for spirituality and her family tradition of generosity to form an organization that serves the public good.
